Meet Our New Maudsley Method Eating Disorder Therapist, Elisheva Dorfman!
Please help us welcome Elisheva Dorfman LMFT to the Pacific MFT Network Staff of Clinicians! Elisheva will be working out of our Santa Monica and Sherman Oaks offices and enjoys working with children and families experiencing childhood eating disorders, such as picky eating, appetite regulation, or over eating using the evidence based, Maudsley approach. She brings new life and energy to the role of food in a family. She is informed by the work of Ellyn Satter, a child feeding specialist. Satter is famous for her Division of Responsibility in Feeding rules. Essentially, when it comes to food, parents are responsible for the what, where and when and children are responsible for the whether and how much. Elisheva also enjoys working with clients experiencing anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa as well as depression and anxiety.
Maudsley family therapy also known as family-based treatment (FBT) or Maudsley approach, is a family therapy for the treatment of anorexia nervosa devised by Christopher Dare and colleagues at the Maudsley Hospital in London. A comparison of family to individual therapy was conducted with eighty anorexia patients. The study showed family therapy to be the more effective approach in patients under 18 and within 3 years of the onset of their illness. Subsequent research confirmed the efficacy of family-based treatment for teens with anorexia nervosa. Family-based treatment has been adapted for bulimia nervosa and showed promising results in a randomized controlled trial comparing it to supportive individual therapy. Maudsley Family Therapy is an evidenced-based approach to the treatment of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa whose efficacy has been supported by empirical research.
Here is what Elisheva has to say about herself:
I have a strong passion for preventing and managing childhood eating disorders. I specialize in eating disorder treatment and the treatment of disordered eating, especially in the context of family. I am trained in CBT-E and FBT (Family Based Treatment of eating disorder- also known as the Maudsley Method). My focus is on providing empirically supported treatments to patients with eating disorders and/or disordered eating. And I am interested in Feeding Dynamics and lectures to parents about the Satter Eating Model of Competence and the Division of Responsibility in Feeding.
I have a deep passion for my work and have success working with adults and children. Clients have said they appreciate my frankness and my ability to educate and help people develop new skills for navigating the complexities that come with finding the right balance with food and nutrition.
As a USC trained clinician, I am constantly honing and developing my skills as a clinician, so I can give my clients the best possible care. I have certification in Intuitive Eating and am nearly fully certified in FBT (Maudsley Method), which is a commitment of over 1 year.
