Raising Culturally Competent Children

Many parents value raising children who are culturally aware and sensitive to the diversity around us. Children who understand and welcome diversity may possess a greater capacity for empathy and compassion as well as be better able to connect with others who may be different from them.

Christy Tirrell-Corbin, PhD’s article on the PBS Parents website entitled, “How to Teach Children About Cultural Awareness and Diversity” does an excellent job of giving practical examples of ways that parents can encourage cultural competence in their children.

By helping your child understand and respect similarities and differences you will also help your child to understand who he is in the context of your race, ethnic group, culture, religion, language and familial history. In so doing, you will provide your child with personally meaningful information and also introduce concepts from anthropology, history, religion, geography, etc.

A richer understanding of the world around us may lead to greater satisfaction and life fulfillment. When we learn from others, we can incorporate new ways of living and being that fine-tune our own values and desires in life. We hope you enjoyed this resource for raising kids who understand their world a bit better, and perhaps, who are a bit happier in the process.
