What Would You Do Without Support? New Support Group for Those Struggling with Substances

Social support for those in recovery is crucial. Many people find help through support groups, such as 12-step, Refuge Recovery, or SMART Recovery. In this vein, Pacific Marriage & Family Therapy Network is offering a SMART Recovery Friends & Family Meeting in Manhattan Beach for the loved ones of those who are addicted (see website for more details).

However, in recovery, what works for one person does not work for all. Using medications, like Suboxone or Naltrexone, to help curb withdrawal symptoms and stay sober is called Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and has been supported by the federal government. Unfortunately, many who use MAT have suffered the stigma associated with using medications, which are made of the actual drugs themselves. I wrote this article, “Struggling with MAT? Medication-Assisted Peer Recovery Support Could Help,” for the LA CAMFT newsletter to briefly introduce those who may not know of a support group specifically for those who utilize MAT. Here is an excerpt from the article:

Walter Ginter is the founder of the Medicated Assisted Recovery Support Project (MARS™). At Ginter’s core, he believes that greater tolerance of MAT is essential in the recovery community as many suffer from the stigma and shame associated with “not really being clean.”

Hopefully, projects like MARS can reduce the stigma often associated with utilizing these medication tools to help stay sober. Now, those using MAT have their own specific support group where they can share without feeling the shame that is sometimes felt by those using this option towards sobriety.
