Pacific Marriage & Family Therapy Network on Cultivating a Positive Valentine’s Day

Celebrated annually on February 14th, Valentine's Day has evolved from a feast day honoring Saint Valentinus to a celebration of romance and love. As a celebration, the holiday has generally been promoted by the candy and greeting card industries. Given their desire to sell boxes of chocolates and overly-expensive cards, a lot of pressure has risen around the holiday.

As a direct result, the therapeutic community at Pacific MFT Network, led by founder Tracy Bevington, has seen how Valentine’s Day has become difficult for people in relationships as well as for people in between relationships or single. Ultimately, our goal as a supportive team of experienced therapists is to help our clients find happiness regardless of external pressures and circumstances. Such a goal becomes even more essential when the pressure gets turned up. It would be a shame to feel bad because companies want to sell more candy.

Therefore, Pacific MFT Network recommends that first of all, you take a deep breath and relax. If you are in a relationship, you don’t need to buy the perfect gift on Valentine’s Day. A card is more than enough because ultimately, it’s the thought that counts. Even better, go out to dinner or spend some quality time with your beloved. Valentine’s Day does not have to be a measuring stick by which couples judge the quality of their relationships.

Moreover, if you are not in a relationship at this time, be good to yourself. If needed, turn down the external noise and listen to something calming on your headphones; both jazz and classical music often can do the trick. If you want, buy yourself some chocolate or your favorite confections. Buy some roses for yourself. Treat yourself as special on this day because you are special.

Finally, please remember that you cannot predict the future. You do not know what door is going to open around the next corner. You do not know what opportunities, both personally and professionally, the future holds for you. At Pacific Marriage & Family Therapy Network, we can help you side with faith as opposed to negative fear. We wish you a lovely Valentine’s Day in 2019, and we are here for you to work out any issues that might be holding you back from such happiness. In the end, we want you to be able to successfully cultivate a happy Valentine’s Day regardless of your relationship status or the personal hurdles you are facing in your life.
