Imposter Syndrome

What is Imposter Syndrome?

Imposter syndrome is basically that feeling of: “Did I really earn this… or did I just get lucky?” Even when you’ve worked hard and there’s real proof you know what you’re doing, your brain tries to convince you otherwise.

You might catch yourself thinking:

• “I just happened to be in the right place at the right time”

• “They’re going to figure out I don’t actually know what I’m doing”

• “Anyone could’ve done this”

But the truth is—your skills, effort, and growth got you here. Your brain just hasn’t caught up yet. You’re not a fraud. You’re a human who’s still learning (like everyone else).

Common Signs

  • Feeling like you don’t deserve your achievements

  • Fear of being "found out" as a fraud

  • Overworking to prove your worth

  • Dismissing praise or feeling uncomfortable with compliments

  • Comparing yourself to others and feeling inadequate

  • Believing you must be perfect to succeed

Different Ways it Shows Up

The Perfectionist – Feels like anything less than perfect is a failure.

The Expert – Feels like they never know enough and fears being exposed as inexperienced.

The Soloist – Believes asking for help is a sign of incompetence.

The Natural Genius – Feels like they should master things effortlessly; struggles mean they’re not "good enough."

The Superhuman – Pushes themselves to work harder than everyone else to prove they belong.

Who Feels This?

Imposter syndrome tends to show up more for certain people—especially when you’re pushing yourself or stepping into something new.

• High achievers in demanding careers

• People who don’t always see themselves represented in the room

• Anyone starting a new role, promotion, or leadership position

• Perfectionists (aka being really hard on yourself)

Basically… if you care, you stretch, and you want to do well—this feeling might pop up.

It doesn’t mean you don’t belong. It usually means you’re growing.

If This is Hitting Home

Imposter syndrome? Yeah… a lot more common than people think. Even people who look confident and successful deal with that “I don’t belong here” feeling.

A few gentle reminders if that’s been coming up for you:

• Just because it feels true doesn’t mean it is true

• You don’t have to figure everything out all at once

• Everyone is learning as they go (seriously)

Try this small shift: Instead of “I don’t know what I’m doing” →“What’s one small step I do know how to take?”

Also:

• Talk it out with someone you trust—you’re not meant to hold it all alone

• Stop the comparison spiral (it’s never the full picture anyway)

• Let mistakes be part of the process, not proof you’re failing

Perfection isn’t the goal—growth is.

And if you need support building confidence or quieting that inner critic, you don’t have to do it alone.
